DIY Travel Crayon Holder - A Perfect Project for On-The-Go Creativity
DIY Travel Crayon Holder - A Perfect Project for On-The-Go Creativity
Planning family trips can be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping little ones entertained. That’s why creating a DIY Travel Crayon Holder is a fantastic idea! This sewing project is quick, fun, and practical. In just a few simple steps, you’ll craft a compact, roll-up holder that’s easy to stash in any bag, keeping crayons organized and ready for creative moments on the go.
At Flash Sew & Quilt, we carry all the high-quality materials and tools you’ll need for this project. Let’s dive into how to make a travel crayon holder that’s both functional and adorable, shall we?
For this project we recommend these products:
- 3 6” x 18” pieces of fabric (one for the outside, one for the inside background, and one for the crayon pockets). We used 2 fat quarters and cut 6” lengthwise which makes two crayon holders.
- Interfacing to give your crayon holder structure and durability, use lightweight.
- Ribbon or rickrack to create a fun and decorative border around the entirety of the holder. Two additional pieces to tie the holder closed once rolled up.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Cut Your Fabric
Start by cutting your fat quarter into three sections lengthwise. So you should have 3 pieces of 6” x 18” from each of your fat quarters.
Step 2: Interfacing
Iron on your interfacing to the wrong side of the background fabric of your crayon holder.
Step 3: Crayon Pockets
Fold the fabric that will become the pockets for the crayons in half lengthwise. So you will have a 3” x 18” piece of fabric. Place this piece of fabric on top of the main background fabric with the raw edges matching. Pin in place.
Step 4: Sewing
Sew a seam along the short and long edge of the two pieces. Now you will start to sew your crayon pockets. We used a 1.25” space between each decorative stitch to create the perfect pocket size for a crayon.
Starting at the folded edge of the pocket fabric, measuring 1.25” away from the short raw edge, sew your first decorative seam. We liked condensed squiggly or curved stitches that weren’t very wide. Then stitch every 1.25” across the 18” length of the crayon holder.
Step 5: Add rickrack
Sew the rickrack to the outer edges of the crayon holder. If you have rickrack with one curved edge and one straight edge, you will place the straight edge along the straight raw edge of the background fabric. Sew in place with a .25” seam allowance.
Step 6: Attach the Exterior Fabric
Lay your exterior fabric (we used the same as the background fabric but you can make the outside different, so be creative), on top of the interior piece, with right sides facing each other. Pin in place. Don’t forget to insert the two pieces of ribbon to one of the short edge of the crayon holder and lay them flat inside sandwiched between the background and outside fabrics. Sew along the entire edges, leaving a 3.5” gap for turning. Trim the corners, turn the holder right side out, and press. Then, stitch the gap closed with a topstitch around the entire edge for durability.
Step 7: Add Crayons
Now, slide crayons into each pocket, roll up the holder, and secure it with the ribbon ties.
You now have an adorable Crayon Travel Holder ready for your next creative trip with the kids or grandkids.
